Art Cube Residency – Venus Bay Community Centre April 2026
Kate Stuart and Jillian Staton will be sharing the Art Cube space in April to make new art works in response to the Tarwin River.
Kate and Jillian have connected through a shared interest in the significance of the Tarwin River to our South Gippsland community. They hope their artmaking in the Cube will create interest, stimulate conversation and foster a greater awareness of its ecological importance, and how we can collectively enhance the future health of the river and its catchment area.
Kate is a ceramicist whose functional pottery is inspired by the coastal landscape and the natural environment. She will be using her time in the Cube to make both ceramic and mixed media artworks from local clays found and foraged in different areas of the river’s catchment area, from Foster North to Andersons Inlet.
Jillian Staton is an emerging artist working in gouache, watercolour and acrylic who is passionate about Landcare and is behind the We Love the Tarwin Project being run by South Gippsland Landcare Network. The project celebrates the importance of the Tarwin River and all its tributaries to wildlife, farming, recreation, culture, art and community cohesion.
Jillian is interested in capturing the Tarwin through the eyes our community, so is inviting people to send photographs of their favorite view of the river for her to draw or paint from. You can email your image to jillian@sgln.net.au or bring a printed copy into the Cube.
Kate and Jillian will both have paintings and ceramics on display for sale in the Cube every day over Easter and will be making art most days that the community centre is open. Sale proceeds of Jillian’s art produced in the Cube will go to the We Love the Tarwin project.
